Elbow, as a band name, suggests angularity. Yet Elbow’s music is generous and sweeping, a perfect vehicle for Guy Garvey’s musings about love, weather, friendship and fate. I don’t know how the group arrived at the name Elbow but it’s an awkward fit that needs correcting. To this end I propose that they swap names with prog-rock revivalists Muse. Here we have another ill-monikered outfit. Muse’s sound is all quick turns and jabs, like a dozen thrown elbows. Nothing muse-y about it.
It’s like fixing a mix up in the hospital where the wrong band went home with the wrong name.
